Yoga Therapy

Yoga Therapy is one of the foundational strands of my work and has deeply informed how I understand healing, regulation, and integration. I am a C-IAYT accredited Yoga Therapist and trained with The Minded Institute from 2011 to 2013. I continue to work in relationship with The Minded Institute as part of their lecturing and supervision team.

My approach to Yoga Therapy draws on both ancient and contemporary traditions and is shaped by many years of embodied practice, therapeutic training, and spiritual inquiry. This work has directly influenced how I practise psychotherapy, supervise other practitioners, and teach across the wider Pilamaya ecosystem.

One of the primary aims of working therapeutically with me is to support people to reconnect with a deeper sense of self and to develop trust in the unfolding process of life. Yoga Therapy offers an embodied, relational way of working that supports regulation, presence, and integration, helping people come into contact with deeper layers of experience where resilience and inner resources can be found.

WHAT IS YOGA THERAPY

Yoga Therapy differs from a yoga class in that it is tailored specifically to the needs of the individual and held within a therapeutic relationship. Rather than following a set sequence or group structure, the work is responsive, collaborative, and paced according to what is appropriate for you at that time.

Yoga Therapy draws from a wide range of practices rooted in Indian contemplative traditions, alongside modern understandings of physiology, psychology, and nervous system regulation. Within an appropriate scope of practice, you may explore your experience through body-based awareness, breath, movement, sound, and focused attention.

This approach supports balance within the physiological systems in ways that talking alone cannot always reach. Movement supports physical health and embodied awareness, while breath and attentional practices can quieten the mind, support concentration, and foster a sense of internal coherence. Yoga Therapy also honours the spiritual dimensions of experience, offering a way of working that supports wholeness without imposing belief or doctrine.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A SESSION?

In a Yoga Therapy session, we meet together and attend to what is present and seeking attention in that moment. Each process is unique and may involve dialogue, breathing practices, meditation, sound, or gentle movement. The work is guided by what your system is ready to meet, rather than by a predetermined agenda.

This work invites a commitment to self-inquiry and integration. It can be particularly supportive for those who wish to learn how to regulate their nervous system, deepen embodied awareness, or explore consciousness in a grounded and relational way as part of a return to wholeness.

Many people who come to me for Yoga Therapy are themselves practitioners or students in yoga therapy or related fields and are drawn to the psychotherapeutic and spiritual dimensions of my work. As my availability is now more limited, some of these needs may also be well met by practitioners working within Integration Psychotherapy Services (IPS), including graduate and trainee practitioners who share a similar embodied and integrative orientation. Some of these practitioners are also trained Yoga Therapists, and where appropriate I support people to find the most suitable pathway.

WHY WOULD I CHOOSE YOGA THERAPY?

Yoga Therapy may be helpful if you wish to develop a deeper relationship with your body and learn practices that support nervous system regulation and presence. It can be a supportive entry point for those preparing for psychotherapy, or a complementary process for people who feel they have reached the limits of what talking therapy alone can offer.

This work can also be nourishing for individuals on spiritual paths who are experiencing new or emerging inner processes, as well as for therapists and practitioners who wish to be held in a space that sits outside of formal supervision.

For those seeking ongoing support at a different level of accessibility, I am the founder and clinical lead of Integration Psychotherapy Services (IPS). Through IPS, I remain closely involved in the matching of clients with well-trained and carefully supervised practitioners, including Yoga Therapy graduates who work within the same embodied and integrative framework. This allows people to access support that is appropriate to their needs, availability, and financial circumstances, while remaining held within a clearly structured and ethically grounded therapeutic ecosystem.
